Currency
The currency unit is the peso ($ or CLP), which exists in banknotes of $500, $1,000, $2,000, $5,000, $10,000, $20,000 and metallic coins of $1, $5, $10, $50, $100. The check is a commercial document, which is seriously respected by anyone, and in general, checks are received when the issuer has been identified.

Teller Machines
In commercial and banking areas, it is easy to find Automatic Teller Machines ( Redbanc network ) honoring cards of every local bank, as well as Cirrus cards, everyday and 24 hours a day. 

Foreign Cash 
Foreign cash is not generally in use, except for hotels that may waive the value-added tax (IVA) if you are a foreigner, and pay in US dollars cash.

Energy
Electric voltage is 220 volts, 50 cycles (220v 50Hz). The use of appliances or electric devices designed for 110V need the use of a transformer. 

Money Exchange
You can exchange money at any established "Casa de Cambio" or bank office at market driven exchange rates. They are common in commercial areas (Downtown and Providencia ) as well as in Shopping Malls.

International phone calls
From Chile, international calls are cheap and with an efficient service. Multicarrier services are available at almost every phone. It is not advisable to make international calls from your hotel room as it usually have a surcharge. Try to use the public phone in the lobby or the public phone cabins. 

Credit cards
Credit cards are widely used and accepted. There is no surcharge for their use. The most commonly accepted cards are Visa, Master Card and Diners Club. Some small, rural towns mostly have cash economies, so have cash handy when going out of the beaten path

 

Transportation from Airport to the City
The Santiago International airport has several private transportation means such as buses, shuttles, for which appropriate information is available at the information desk of each airport. The average cost for a taxi is around US$ 30.

The Metro
The Santiago subway or Metro is a model of cleanliness and good service. It is fast, secure and inexpensive. Service goes from 6:30 to 22:30 on weekdays and Saturday and from 8:00 to 22:30 on Sundays and Holidays.The metro network has three lines:

  • Red line West to East, crossing Downtown. (Along Ave. B. O’Higgins, Ave. Providencia and Ave. Apoquindo)
  • Yellow line Downtown to Southwest.( Along Gran Avenida)
  • Green line Downtown to Southeast. ( Along Ave. Vicuña Mackenna )
  • Blue line Downtown to Southeast (Along ave. Vespucio)

Taxis
Many taxis are available, distinguishable by being black with yellow tops. All of them have their registration number visible and a taxi meter. Taxi drivers are mostly kind and honest. Smoking is forbidden inside public vehicles. Do not tip taxi drivers

Urban Buses ("Micros")
In order to use the urban buses you need to aquire the “BIP” card to pay the transportation fees. Cash is not allowed into the buses.
